Dr Vicky Alexander was appointed as Consultant Paediatrician in NHS Tayside in 2003 and is clinical lead for the children’s diabetes service.

Previous work includes development of the TIMmY programme (Tayside Insulin Management in the Young), training modules for children and young people with type 1 diabetes delivered at key times eg starting insulin pump treatment.

Over the last few years she has established a robust quality improvement programme, including a focus on patient safety. In 2015 the Tayside Paediatric Diabetes team were shortlisted as Diabetes team of the year in the BMJ awards.

She is currently secretary to the Scottish Study Group for the care of Diabetes in the Young, a national group of clinicians involved in diabetes services and research across Scotland.

In order to improve services for children and young people with diabetes, Vicky is keen to develop a seamless model of care for those from 0- 25 years as ‘Diabetes Out There’. This includes moving away from a traditional clinic based service to one with more opportunities for peer support and peer learning. Developing services this way will enhance consistency of diabetes healthcare at a time when there may be significant changes in life circumstances.
