Sarah's story: using Diabetes UK's Learning Zone to help others

• Diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in May 2014.
• She attended a Diabetes UK Living with Diabetes Day, and found that peer support was very helpful. 
• Sarah started the Newport local diabetes group.
• She volunteers for a range of diabetes related causes.

When I heard there was a new educational learning tool I wanted to know more and registered. I listened to the podcasts and watched lots of the videos, and found it all really interesting. And of course it’s great because you can tailor it. 

Because I run a support group, I decided to go back and work through Learning Zone from different perspectives. That way I can advise other people in my group and say, “Have you looked on Learning Zone?” 

It’s fantastic; incredibly useful and easy to use, which is really important if like me you’re a technical dinosaur. 

The benefits

If you can’t get to an X-PERT course because of work or other commitments, but you want to know more, then Learning Zone is perfect. 

You can’t have access to medical professionals all the time. But with Learning Zone there’s no reason why you can’t answer that burning question at 3 in the morning. 

Recommendations 

I met a man recently who had just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. He said he felt really isolated. I opened up my laptop there and then and showed him Learning Zone. He sent me a Facebook message a short time later to say he’d found it really helpful in answering his immediate questions.
