Bangor woman, Lesley Heaney has decided to take on the Diabetes UK Swim 22 challenge which will see her complete the 22 mile equivalent distance of the English Channel in her local swimming pool, Bangor Aurora.

After getting a few swimming lessons under her belt and being keen to take on a challenge with a difference whilst getting fitter herself, Lesley began the swimming challenge on 22 February.

Rebekah Reid, from Omagh, will be getting 12 inches of her hair cut off in aid of two charities. Her hair will be donated to the Litte Princesses Trust, who help children who've lost their hair to cancer treatments, and the money she raises will go to our local Northern Ireland branch as her younger sister was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. 

Rebekah, aged 11, decided to take on the challenge to help raise awareness about the misunderstood condition that her sister, Zarah, aged 5, is living with. Type 1 diabetes accounts for about 10% of the diabetes community.

Chris Jelly is hosting a 6-week golf ball speed challenge from 11 May until the 16 June. He's celebrating the two loves of his life, his wife Millie and golf, by raising awareness and funds for us.

In an exciting new challenge at Lagan View Golf Centre in Lisburn, Chris is hosting a 6-week golf ball speed challenge to see if our local budding golfers can hit the golf ball faster than the rest of the pack.

Local fireman, Garth Belshaw, is taking on the Ballynahinch 10k on Saturday 21 April to help raise awareness of diabetes in Northern Ireland. The only difference is that Garth will be doing the 10k in his fireman’s uniform and full breathing apparatus, weighing an extra 12.2kg.

Garth Belshaw said, ‘I decided to take on this challenge and added a weighty twist to help raise awareness of how serious diabetes is. I have friends who are living with this condition and I have seen the impact it has had on them.

Members of the Omagh Diabetes UK Support Group recently held a ‘pre-loved sale’ in the Hospital Road Community Centre, Omagh, with all proceeds going to Diabetes UK Northern Ireland.

Omagh Group Secretary, Lorraine Reid, said, ‘We were delighted to welcome 18 individual stall holders to our special ‘pre-loved sale’, all of whom had fantastic stock to sell and helped us raise money and awareness.

The Tullywhisker Regeneration Association is delighted to announce its very first Whisker Way Walk which will take place on Saturday 21 April from Tullywhisker Hall at 2pm. It hopes to welcome families from far and wide to join in this fun walk in beautiful countryside surroundings. The Association has selected Diabetes UK Northern Ireland to receive all donations from the event.

Diabetes UK Northern Ireland National Fundraiser, Naomi Breen, said, ‘We would like to thank the Tullywhisker Regeneration Association for choosing us as their charity for their inaugural 7km Whisker Way Walk.

Diabetes UK Northern Ireland, in collaboration with Queen’s University Belfast and the Making Insulin Treatment Safer research team, held a special event with BBC Radio 4’s JP Devlin at Malone House in Belfast on Friday 2 March.

The event highlighted the work of The Making Insulin Treatment Safer (MITS) team, funded by the Research and Development Division of the NI Public Health Agency.

Local band, ‘US 2’, recently held their farewell gig in the Rising Sun Bar in Greysteel to a sell-out crowd of 300 people. Kevin Martin and Pearse McKeever of ‘US 2’ decided to choose two local charities and raised a fantastic £1,610 each for Diabetes UK Northern Ireland and the Alzheimer’s Society.

Presenting the cheques, Kevin said, ‘We chose these two charities because their causes are close to our hearts and we wanted to do something special for our last gig together.

The Seven Towers Male Voice Choir is holding their ever popular annual concert on 23 and 24 March and has selected us as their charity to collect donations on both nights.

The Braid Arts Centre in Ballymena is the venue for the concert and the night also boasts guest artists, Clover Watts and Jake Houston.
