Withdrawal of bovine insulin in the UK

Wockhardt UK has announced its decision to discontinue bovine insulin in the UK. The company has made this decision due to an issue with global supply.

This means that those using bovine insulin will need to change to a new treatment. This change should be carried out with the support of your diabetes team.

Porcine insulin will continue to be available for those wishing to continue using animal insulin, but there are many types of insulin which may suit your needs even better. Your doctor or nurse should discuss all options with you.

As supplies deplete, Wockhardt UK have provided predictions (below) to illustrate the expected availability of bovine insulin in the UK. As this is just an estimate, we’d advise anyone using bovine insulin to change sooner rather than later to avoid running out.

For further information on this, or any aspect of your diabetes care, speak to your diabetes team. Diabetes UK is preparing guidance information for healthcare professionals.
