Vaccine for Type 1 diabetes could be a long way off yet

Thenewspaper has reported US research into the possible cure for Type 1 diabetes, which affects 350,000 people in the UK. The New York researchers intend to develop a vaccine from the drug, ISO-1, that prevented diabetes in 90 per cent of mice bred to be more at risk from the condition.

But Diabetes UK’s Director of Research and Care, Suzanne Lucas, cautioned the public to be patient.

“A drug that could prevent people from developing diabetes would be a significant breakthrough, and may help those who already have the condition,“ she said. “But it could be a long time before it benefits any people. Diabetes UK looks forward to seeing further results from this research.”
