Experts claim that children in the UK are missing out on playing outdoors and physical activity in general because of over-cautious parents, video games and the demands of their school homework.
A group of 300 teachers, psychologists, children's authors and other experts have written a letter to the Daily Telegraph to highlight their concerns. They claim that this generation of children faces a variety of health problems, both physical and mental, due to their increasingly sedentary lifestyle and lack of social interaction.
"It is a worrying fact that children and young people lead an increasingly sedentary lifestyle and lack physical activity,'"said Libby Dowling, Care Advisor at Diabetes UK.
"This, in conjunction with diets that are high in fat, salt and sugar, is directly linked to rising levels of obesity and the increase of Type 2 diabetes in younger people.
"If we don't put the emphasis back on healthy lifestyle and exercise, children and young people in the UK may face a lifetime of ill health."
