Adults with diabetes are twice as likely to have impaired hearing as people without the condition, according to the results of a national hearing survey of 5,000 adults administered from 1999 to 2004 as part of the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Further evaluation needed
"Several studies have revealed conflicting evidence about a possible relationship between hearing loss and diabetes. This study suggests more strongly that such a link exists but further evaluation is needed before it can be confirmed," Dr Victoria King, Diabetes UK's Research Manager, told Balance magazine.
