Could you help raise awareness of diabetes by telling your story?

We are looking for more media volunteers to help us raise awareness of diabetes.

A media volunteer is someone who is willing to be interviewed by a journalist about their experience of having diabetes. When there is a diabetes story in the news or in a magazine feature, the media likes to have a personal story that people can relate to.

What to expect

Journalists often contact the Media Relations team at Diabetes UK requesting a media volunteer. Some of the recent requests include: someone who has lost a lot of weight since being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, a parent of a child with diabetes, someone who is taking a particular medication, a fundraiser with Type 1 diabetes and someone who has suffered from diabetes complications.

The interview will not be about clinical or medical knowledge. It's about your experience of living with diabetes. Your experiences help to bring a human side to media stories about diabetes.

It isn’t possible to specify how often a media volunteer would be needed as requests from journalists vary from time to time. Some of our current media volunteers may be contacted by the Media Relations team up to several times a year. Another aspect to bear in mind is that the media sometimes requests interviews at short notice, maybe at a few hours. This is particularly the case for television.
