Diabetes UK’s travel insurance scheme for people with diabetes has won the Charity Times Awards 2011 award for Insurance Services.
Diabetes UK Insurance Services has been offering insurance products for people with diabetes for the last fifteen years.
A recent report showed around half a million people with pre-existing medical conditions travelled abroad without disclosing their condition to insurance companies, leaving them uninsured.
Specialist medical cover with no upper age limits
Problems for people with diabetes obtaining travel insurance led to Diabetes UK developing insurance products which include the specialist medical cover required, with no upper age limits and at a competitive price.
Improved flexibility and price competitiveness
Diabetes UK Insurance Services recently updated its travel insurance options, offering Gold, Silver and Bronze levels of cover. The new scheme allows people more flexibility over the level of cover they need and offers improved price competitiveness, especially for those between the ages of 18 to 50 with good control of their diabetes.
Peter Hallett of Diabetes UK said, “We are very pleased to have contributed to the development of this insurance scheme which received the Charity Times award.
"Since Diabetes UK started to offer travel insurance, the understanding of the condition and its pricing by insurance underwriters has greatly improved, but inevitably most insurance companies want to select the less risky people and exclude those at higher risk. Other insurance companies have at times offered travel insurance only to find claims costs were higher than they expected.
"Our policies have been recognised as offering people with diabetes the chance to choose what level of insurance they need, and at a competitive price.”
