Over 70,000 people have taken our Diabetes Risk Score

Over 70,000 people have now taken part in our online Diabetes Risk Score to see if they are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. However it is estimated there are still 850,000 people  who have Type 2 diabetes and but don’t know it, so Diabetes UK is urging more people to take part to see if they are at risk of developing the condition.

Risk factors of Type 2 diabetes

The main risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes are being of Black or South Asian origin, being over 40 (or over 25 in Black and South Asian people), having a close relative with diabetes, and being overweight or having a large waist. At risk waist measurements are 37 inches or more for men, except those of South Asian origin who are at risk at 35 inches or more, and 31.5 inches or more for all women.

Find out your risk quickly

The Diabetes Risk Score poses seven questions to identify a person’s risk of developing diabetes. Users are asked about their age, ethnicity, sex, family history of diabetes, waist size, body mass index, and history or treatment for high blood pressure.

The Risk Score enables people to find out quickly and easily what their chance of having diabetes is and take action accordingly. This is vital as early diagnosis and effective management of the condition are crucial in helping to reduce a person’s risk of developing future complications, such as heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, lower-limb amputation and blindness.

Symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes

Early warning signs of undiagnosed diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination (especially at night), extreme tiredness, unexplained weight loss, genital itching or regular episodes of thrush, slow healing of cuts and wounds, and blurred vision. People should see their GP immediately if they are experiencing any of these symptoms.

Take our Risk Score test today to find out if you are at risk of developing diabetes – it could be the best thing you ever do for your health.
