Preventing Type 2 Diabetes across Hampshire and Isle of Wight

15 January 2018

We are facing a diabetes crisis across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. With ever increasing numbers of people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, GP practices are facing financial and workforce pressures to keep up with the demand for good quality care.

Public Health England currently estimates that there are 133,723 people living with diabetes across Hampshire and Isle of Wight. By 2035, this figure is set to increase by over 25% to 170,000. It is vital that we do all we can to help prevent people from developing Type 2 diabetes, both to reduce the pressure on primary care and the wider health system, but most importantly to prevent people from facing a life with diabetes and the threat of life changing complications associated with diabetes.

There is strong international evidence which demonstrates how behavioural interventions, which support people with maintaining a healthy weight and becoming more active, can significantly reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

The Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (a partnership between NHS England, Public Health England and Diabetes UK), brings this evidence together into a behaviour change programme for those people at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Over a nine month programme, people will take part in a range of locally-run group sessions, designed to support them to make health changes to their lifestyle. In the first month of the course, participants will attend weekly sessions, learning about the risks associated with diabetes and tools to help reduce their personal risk factors. Over the next eight months, people will attend one session each month to support them to maintain their lifestyle changes. Following the programme, people will have their blood checked to consider their personal risk and be signposted to relevant services. Further details about the programme can be found here.

How you can support your patients to prevent Type 2 Diabetes?

You may already know that the Healthier You Diabetes Prevention Programme is currently being rolled out across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The programme is being delivered by specialist provider Ingeus, in partnership with Leicester Diabetes Centre.

You can refer patients with Non-Diabetic Hypoglycaemia to the programme. Non-diabetic hyperglycaemia, also known as pre-diabetes or impaired glucose regulation, refers to raised blood glucose levels (HbA1c of 42-47 mmol/mol) but not in the diabetic range. PHE estimate that there are 184,000 people across Hampshire and Isle of Wight with Non-diabetic hypoglycaemia.

If you are not already referring your patients to Healthier You Diabetes Prevention Programme, you can speak to Juliet Shadrick at or call 07584 233 606 to discuss the programme and to set up your practice to make referrals to the system.
