Diabetes Commissioning Manager, Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire CCG
As one of our Clinical Champions, Brian will be leading a programme that aims to build a framework that both motivates patients by providing support structured in a way that meets them where they are at and also walks with them on the journey of healthy diabetes outcomes.
Brian is a Commissioning Manager in the Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire CCG, leading diabetes and cardiology transformation. After a career overseas leading organisational change and developing partnerships in charities, he returned to the UK and joined the NHS.
His interest is in how people are envisioned, encouraged and equipped to engage with transformation, with it being led as a movement for change rather than managed as a project.
Prior to joining the CCG, Brian led a community diabetes service, facilitating a team of specialist nurses to effectively support patients. It was during repeated conversations about the daily challenges patients have in managing their diabetes, and the potentially devastating outcomes from not doing so, that he developed his proposed focus on self-management.
This extends from structured education but is far more orientated towards how the health and social care system encourages and motivates patients to engage and in understanding the reasons and difficulties for why they do not. Given the challenges of health inequalities, particularly given the poor COVID outcomes for patients living with diabetes from BAME communities, understanding how to encourage engagement is more vital than ever.
