Dr Muhammad Ali Karamat

Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

As a clinical champion, Muhammad will undertake a review of local type 1 services. Muhammad wants to improve access to technology in deprived and minority ethnic populations. He aims to work in collaboration with local commissioners and educators to make these changes. Including creating a virtual component to the service keeping in mind the impact on COVID-19 on outpatient services.

Background

Muhammad is a Consultant at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. He is also an honorary lecturer at Birmingham University. Muhammad's interests include antenatal and community diabetes and the role of technology in type 1 diabetes. He is the type 1 diabetes service lead, and is also joint lead for the regional islet transplantation service.

Muhammad has an interest in healthcare professional education, and is the Training Programme Director for Diabetes and Endocrinology for Health Education West Midlands. He is also part of the South Asian Health Foundation working group, and has published articles on health inequalities in diabetes.
