Consultant, Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust
As one of our Clinical Champions, Dr Syed would like to raise awareness and address variability in diabetes foot care in the region. In particular he would like to streamline the referral pathway and look to focus more on prevention and education of healthcare professionals.
Dr Syed would also like to introduce a root cause analysis of all the major amputations in people with diabetes across his patch.
Dr Syed has worked as a Consultant Endocrinologist for the last 8 years at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust and currently leads the Diabetes Foot Service across the three sites.
Being part of a large multidisciplinary team has provided opportunities to drive changes and improvements across the primary-secondary interface with seamless transition of patient care across the board.
As Diabetes Foot lead, Dr Syed noticed that diabetes foot care was a neglected sub speciality with variations in care in hospital and primary care. Since then he has led the transformation of the foot services across the three working sites by:
- introducing MDT clinics at all sites
- establishing close working with the vascular and ID consultants
- and introducing pathways to facilitate early review of the diabetic foot patients into the appropriate clinics.
He also started monthly Joint MDTs with the Radiologist, ID and Vascular surgeons which have immensely benefited the team including podiatrists from primary care.
