GP with special interest in diabetes, Ealing Integrated Care Organisation
Dr Joan St John along with 8 other committed, diabetes healthcare professionals, was one of the first Clinical Champions in an innovative programme developed in 2014 by Diabetes UK. This group graduated from the programme in 2016 and they are now part of the Diabetes UK Professional Leadership alumni. As a Clinical Champion, Joan has always felt that education is the key to improving the quality of diabetes care. She is enthusiastic and passionate about the education of patients, with a view to not only increasing their knowledge, but also to empower them, to facilitate better care from their healthcare practitioners. Joan’s commitment to education has seen her giving talks and working in partnership with community and church groups as well as teaching Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists and other allied healthcare professionals.
As a GP with Special interest in Diabetes, she has care of thousands of patients with diabetes in her local area, and also works as part of the Integrated Diabetes Team in Brent, in North West London, an area with one of the highest prevalences of Diabetes in the UK.
The Information Prescriptions developed by Diabetes UK received the Diabetes Collaboration Initiative of the year award at the Quality in Care 2016. Having assisted in the development of the information prescriptions regarding the Kidney, Joan will be concentrating on increasing the knowledge, detection and management of kidney disease in the diabetes patients in her local area. She is also currently working with other healthcare professionals and researchers to develop resources to assist the understanding of diet, and how this affects their diabetes control, in Black and minority Ethnic community Patients.
