Consultant Diabetologist, Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust
As one of our Clinical Champions, Dr Overend is keen to develop a Local Diabetes Network for North Cumbria, with links to the North East Diabetes Network.
She hopes to bring together relevant stakeholders, including patient representatives, to review the needs of the local population, evaluate baseline performance and develop plans to address inequities in care and avoid poor outcomes for people with diabetes.
Dr Overend has worked as a Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology for Cumbria Partnership NHS Trust for five years, having completed her training in Merseyside.
In this role she has supported local improvements in diabetes care provision, including enhancement of the Diabetes Inpatient Service for North Cumbria University Hospital.
Dr Overend is keen to adopt and evaluate innovative ways of working to ensure that quality diabetes care is accessible to all people with diabetes in Cumbria, despite the challenges of a predominantly rural population.
Healthcare systems in Cumbria are undergoing a process of significant change and upheaval, and it has been almost a decade since the service was commissioned in its current format.
Dr Overend is acutely aware of the need to evaluate current diabetes provision to ensure that the service is relevant to the local population, effective and efficient. The Diabetes Specialist team has established links with Primary Care through the provision of regular educational events, but she is keen to further strengthen these links and work with colleagues in the community to support greater delivery of diabetes care within the developing integrated care communities.
