2022 - 2023 Clinical Champions Community: Leading Diabetes Care Innovation
GP Partner and Clinical Lead Diabetes and LTC, Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland CCGs
I am a General Practitioner working in Leicestershire. I have special interest in Diabetes and long term conditions (LTC). I am passionate about providing high quality Diabetes care for our population locally, regionally, and nationally. I have actively participated in transforming services for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases locally and regionally by working with CCGs and with NHSE regionally.
Personally, I am a movie fanatic, a keen tennis player, and a good husband and a father (well, I think!) with good sense of humour.
What gifts, strengths, or unique experiences do you intend to bring to your development work?
I believe that leadership is a journey, not a destination. I have embarked on this journey and had many opportunities to learn and share experiences which I will be bringing to the group. Particularly, I have a good understanding of past, current, and proposed future NHS framework including upcoming ICS structures and collaborative and multi-professional working.
I believe that this development work would be another milestone in my journey to learn and share to further mature our emotional intelligence.
What area of change are you currently passionate about in diabetes care?
Though we have come far, we still have much to do to improve the access, experience, and outcomes of our population with diabetes. I believe that we must not leave anyone behind while we restore, recover, and improve our services post pandemic. Hence, addressing health inequalities should be our primary focus alongside service improvement in diabetes care.
What most excites you about this journey?
I really enjoyed and learnt many things in my previous journey as a Clinical Champion. I am looking forward to continuing the journey with opportunities to further develop myself, learn and share with a multi-professional group.
2019 - 2021 Clinical Champions
GP and Clinical Lead for NHS England East Midlands Diabetes with Vascular Diseases Clinical Networks
As one of our Clinical Champions, Raj plans to improve the footcare process and outcomes in his area. He will do this by reviewing the foot care pathway, sharing best practices to reduce variation across the area, and by improving foot care for housebound patients with diabetes.
Raj is a General Practitioner with special interest in diabetes in Leicester. With a passion for service improvement, Raj pursued his academic career in diabetes and in 2011 he became the Clinical Lead in diabetes in Leicester City Clinical Commissioning Group. In this role Raj is leading the transformation of diabetes services across the city. This has led to the development of integrated enhanced diabetes services in the community serving more than 20,000 patients with diabetes.
Raj now sits on the NHS East Midlands Diabetes with Vascular Disease Network as a clinical lead. This position has allowed him to share best practice across other STPs in the East Midlands to improve outcomes for people living diabetes across the region. It also means that Raj is actively involved in setting local pathways and engagement with the National Diabetes Prevention Programme.
