As a clinical champion, Suma wants to transform outpatient services across hospital and community settings using technology and internet based solutions to bring diabetes care to the digital era. Suma hopes to introduce the clever use of technology to deliver routine care and structured education tailored to the demands of the patient at a place of their convenience. She also hopes to continue developing inpatient diabetes care in Derby and is aspiring to support similar changes in Burton.
Suma has been a Consultant in Endocrinology and Diabetes in the Royal Derby Hospital since 2014. She was key in the transformation of inpatient diabetes service in Derby resulting in significant improvements in diabetes care as demonstrated in NaDIA 2015, 2016 and 2017 reports. In recognition of this, she has won the 2016 Rowan Hillson Insulin Safety award and received commendation as a finalist for the QiC Diabetes Patient Care Pathway in 2017. Suma has introduced the proactive management of Point of Care readings of glucose resulting in significant reduction of hypoglycaemia in inpatients. Suma has helped to launch the Regional Inpatient Diabetes Network in East Midlands.
Suma has helped to develop the Type 1 diabetes service in Derby and had a role in encouraging the establishment of a patient support group for Type 1 diabetes and the implementation of a Free Style Libre pathway in Derby.
