Introduction 

I am looking forward to another exciting journey with a group of fabulous people. 

I am a Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology at Liverpool University Hospitals. I trained in Liverpool including a period of clinical research on metabolic changes due to treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors in Type 2 diabetes.

What gifts, strengths, or unique experiences do you intend to bring to your development work? 

I have significant experiences from the last 5 years as a consultant. A key strength of mine is my patience, which I find extends to the value I place in what others have to say. I also believe my ability to encourage others and taking the time to reflect continue to contribute to my development. 

What area of change are you currently passionate about in diabetes care? 

I am a passionate about mitigating diabetes related inequalities. My areas of special interest are diabetes related foot disease and weight management in diabetes.

What most excites you about this journey? 

It’s great to have another opportunity to network with a group of passionate HCPs. I am particularly looking forward to our in-person sessions at Ashridge. 

 

2019 - 2021 Clinical Champions

Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology, Aintree University Hospital

In her role as a Clinical Champion, Surya plans to work on improving the quality of diabetes-related foot care provided to the population of Liverpool. Surya will focus on a number of key areas such as preventive strategies as well as identifying and rectifying gaps in service provision in primary and secondary care to improve the quality of life of people living with diabetes related foot disease. She would like to set up a local diabetes foot-care network and to conduct a root cause analysis of all major amputations in Liverpool Clinical Commissioning Group in the last year. Surya is also interested in adapting lessons learned from service improvements on diabetes related foot care elsewhere in the country.

Surya would also like to improve mental health support to people with diabetes, increase the provision of structured education in Type 1 diabetes and translate the DiRECT trial into clinical practice by providing an intensive weight loss followed by weight maintenance programme.

Surya is a Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology at Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool. She is passionate about what she does as a physician in diabetes. She trained in Liverpool including a period of clinical research on metabolic changes due to treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors in Type 2 diabetes. Surya’s areas of special interest are diabetes related foot disease and weight management in diabetes. She also strongly believes in educating and empowering people living with diabetes, educating health care professionals and in being flexible in our ways of working to make use of technological advances wherever possible.
