Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology, Aintree University Hospital

In her role as a Clinical Champion, Surya plans to work on improving the quality of diabetes-related foot care provided to the population of Liverpool. Surya will focus on a number of key areas such as preventive strategies as well as identifying and rectifying gaps in service provision in primary and secondary care to improve the quality of life of people living with diabetes related foot disease. She would like to set up a local diabetes foot-care network and to conduct a root cause analysis of all major amputations in Liverpool Clinical Commissioning Group in the last year. Surya is also interested in adapting lessons learned from service improvements on diabetes related foot care elsewhere in the country.

Surya would also like to improve mental health support to people with diabetes, increase the provision of structured education in Type 1 diabetes and translate the DiRECT trial into clinical practice by providing an intensive weight loss followed by weight maintenance programme.
