Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology, Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals, Surrey Downs Health & Care
As one of our Clinical Champions, Dr Maltese is aiming to improve the quality of diabetes management in long term facilities in Surrey Downs and reduce the number of preventable hospital admissions for residents due to severe hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia.
Dr Maltese will lead a large audit to assess current standards of diabetes care in care homes and the adherence to the Diabetes UK Good Clinical Practice Guidelines. The audit will help to identify any gaps in best practice and will be followed by an improvement process including staff training and skills upgrade.
In the last two years Dr Maltese has become passionate about integrated specialist care within primary care networks. His ambition is to strengthen the integration between primary, community and specialist diabetes care across Surrey Downs and enable vulnerable people with long-term conditions to easily move between services according to their needs.
Since April 2019, Dr Maltese has been working as a Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and in the community for the Surrey Downs Health and Care Diabetes Service.
Dr Maltese has completed specialist training both in diabetes and endocrinology and geriatrics, with a special interest in the management of diabetes complications and frailty.
During his PhD and his clinical lectureship at King’s College London he studied novel biomarkers of ageing and cardiovascular renal disease in diabetes and he explored the impact of frailty on the outcomes of hospitalised patients, publishing numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals.
Dr Maltese has coordinated several audits and service improvement projects supervising undergraduate students and junior doctors. As a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he is committed to medical education and training of health care professionals.
