Consultant Physician in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Acute Medicine
Ian has been a consultant since 2014 and works in Belfast. He trained in Belfast, completing a PhD examining the effect of a fruit and vegetables on type 2 DM risk.
He also spent a period overseas in New Zealand and observed an alternative healthcare system.
In his present role he sees many referrals involving the management of steroid-induced hyperglycaemia especially in patients receiving chemotherapy.
He is keen to improve the management of this cohort of patients, many of whom attend as day cases for administration of chemotherapy.
As a clinical champion Ian hopes to develop a pathway for the early recognition and management of patients at risk of developing steroid-induced hyperglycaemia. This will involve an audit of current practice, staff education, staff guidance tools and IT solutions.
