Dr Nivedita Aswani

Consultant Paediatrician specialising in Diabetes and Weight Management, Sheffield Children’s Hospital

As one of our Clinical Champions, Dita will be developing app-based resources for children and young people living with type 2 diabetes.

Dita seeks to expel stigma, while focusing on cognitive behavioural techniques to identify self-motivating factors. These include weekly planners that avoid environmental triggers, and incorporating goal-setting with choices of personalised diet and exercise plans, alongside dealing with emotional drivers and discouragement.

She would like to use a health-coaching rather than a medicalised approach to type 2 diabetes management.

Dita has recently left Derbyshire Children’s Hospital where she has been a Paediatric Diabetes Consultant for nine years and Diabetes Service Clinical Lead and Vice Chair for the East Midlands CYP Diabetes Network since 2015. She has been newly appointed to Sheffield Children’s Hospital and will be continuing her work in diabetes and developing weight management services.

Dita works on the National Paediatric Diabetes Audit Dataset and Methodologies Group and is a National Peer Reviewer for Diabetes Services. She uses formalised QI techniques to drive service development, and plans to incorporate these in her work with Diabetes UK.

Dita recognises that the pandemic has resulted in a push to engage with patients digitally and has forced healthcare professionals to create new opportunities to deliver care. It has also highlighted health inequalities that cannot be ignored, linked to ethnicity and deprivation, that may be in conflict with this progression.

Dita would like to use the opportunities offered on this programme to develop skills to address the unmet needs of our growing population of people living with type 2 diabetes. She is passionate about making diabetes services flexible, accessible, family-centred and equitable, and the belief that good services arise from trying to understand how it feels to walk in another’s shoes.

Dita is a mother of four, and enjoys good food, cooking, travel and photography.
