Dr Paul Howden

GP Clinical Lead, NHS Fareham & Gosport CCG

Paul Howden has been a GP Partner at The Whiteley Surgery for 17 years, and for the majority of this time has been Practice Lead for diabetes care.

In addition he is a CCG Clinical Lead for Long Term Conditions and has had significant involvement in issues relating to local provision of Diabetes care and its commissioning. This has included reform and improvement to commissioned pathways for footcare services locally, in response to previously published data highlighting excessive amputation rates within the local population.

Paul’s main goal whilst serving as a Clinical Champion will be to look to ensure greater integration of existing clinical services in order to address the wide variability in attainment of the NICE three treatments targets (HbA1c, BP and Cholesterol). This will look to challenge and build upon developing care models and commissioning opportunities for population-based and outcomes-focussed future provision of care.

In addition opportunities will be sought to improve on levels of Patient Activation and ownership amongst patients with diabetes of ‘their’ NICE three treatment targets, and continue to build upon the success of the existing Diabetes UK Information Prescriptions.
