Lead Nurse Diabetes, Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Ruth Miller is the lead nurse for Diabetes at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust having recently moved from the Royal Free Hospital in London. Ruth has personal experience of improving clinical quality through collaboration. During her time at the Royal Free Hospital, she standardised the care of inpatients with diabetes and was key in introducing a standardised intravenous insulin prescription and procedure pack as well as a Diabetes Management Chart with a hypoglycaemic treatment algorithm across her hospital.
As a Clinical Champion Ruth has worked to standardise the quality of diabetes care given to inpatients by developing a 10 point training programme designed to ensure nurses are confident with the basics of diabetes care. The training does not aim to make experts of everyone managing diabetes but to recognise that all clinicians must possess a set of core competencies in order to keep their patients safe.
