Sarah Alicea

As a one of our Clinical Champions, Sarah will continue her ambition to reach people living with diabetes through early and culturally relevant online education, as well as reaching deprived communities.

As part of this, she is developing a Type 1 Diabetes with Disordered Eating (T1DE) online education package for healthcare professionals and will be supporting the expansion of T1DE services in London.

Background

Sarah is a former Paediatric and Young Adult Diabetes Dietitian and is experienced in the delivery of type 1 diabetes education (SEREN, BERTIE, and DAFNE) for children and adults. Sarah is involved in re-developing the BERTIE online education platform and delivers DAFNE and Xpert to Bengali communities in East London.

She provides dietetic Q&A for cooking sessions with Diabetes UK to South Asian and Afro-Caribbean communities.

Sarah has a PGCert in Leadership and Leading Services and studied diabetes at Masters level. She is an elected committee member and Events Coordinator for the British Dietetic Association’s diabetes specialist group.

Since 2019, she has worked with colleagues in diabetes and eating disorders services as part of NHS England’s ComPASSION project in Dorset. She co-authored the ‘Guide to Risk Assessment for Type 1 Diabetes and Disordered Eating’, hosted by Diabetes UK, and speaks at national events on T1DE.

Sarah is co-author of the national guidelines for diabetes care in Primary Care Networks (PCNs), endorsed by PCDS, the NHS Confederation, and Diabetes UK.
