Diabetes Specialist Dietitian, Western Health and Social Care Trust
In her role as one of our Clinical Champions, Siobhan plans to develop the pre-pregnancy diabetes service with the intention of increasing uptake in her area via establishing a more inclusive ‘women with diabetes’ clinic. This would also target those who are not actively planning pregnancy but may be at risk, in addition to those not initially declaring their pregnancy plans.
Background
Siobhan is a Diabetes Specialist Dietitian at South West Acute Hospital working with adults with Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational diabetes in addition to children with Type 1 attending group education.
A former nurse, Siobhan has been a Dietitian for over 20 years. Her role evolved into a diabetes specialism in 2003 when she was part of the development and implementation of a new community service for Diabetes in Fermanagh.
Working on the CAWT diabetes project from its initiation-structured diabetes education (CHOICE) for young people with Type 1 Diabetes (aged 0 to 19) and pre-pregnancy Clinics, she is an experienced diabetes educator for both children and adults.
Currently working in a resourceful multidisciplinary team, she has adopted technology and virtual review for insulin pump patients in addition to developing group education for gestational diabetes, to cope with an expanding patient population.
As a mum of 4, self-confessed endurance sport junkie who herself wears an insulin pump to treat Type 1 diabetes, Siobhan is passionate about adapting a quality diabetes service to reach all.
