Zainab Khanbhai

Senior Cardiothoracic Surgical Pharmacist, Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust

Zainab is passionate about improving care for patients with diabetes undergoing cardiac surgery. Zainab led and implemented the Diabetes Pre-operative Optimisation Service at her trust, working closely with the MDT to improve glycaemic control and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with diabetes. As one of our Clinical Champions, her next steps are to build on this to establish an integrated service for this group of patients, improving their care and outcomes pre- and post-operatively.

Background

Zainab is a senior cardiothoracic surgical pharmacist with a special interest in diabetes and atrial fibrillation. She qualified as a pharmacist in 2003 and has worked at Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust since 2006. She provides an enhanced clinical pharmacy service to patients admitted for cardiac and thoracic surgery.

She also works closely with the pre-operative team, qualifying in 2010 as a non-medical independent prescriber. She is involved in medicine optimisation for patients being assessed for surgery. Zainab completed an MSC in advanced pharmacy practice in 2019.

Mum of 3, Zainab has recently found a passion for cooking during lockdown and loves experimenting with different cultures. Once she can travel again her dream is to trek through South America, train round Europe and enjoy the fabulous sights of South East Asia.
