Wigan Borough CCG have a programme of work in place to introduce an integrated approach to care for diabetes services in the area with the aim of bringing services closer to the community. The CCG are carrying out a review of their diabetes services before undertaking a re-design process and, where appropriate, re-specifying services that have been identified for improvement.
Education courses and service feedback
In partnership with Diabetes UK, the CCG hosted a drop-in event in Leigh in February for people with diabetes to learn more about local services and to speak to health professionals for any advice. Over 100 people attended on the day to receive healthy eating advice, lifestyle support and advice from a specialist nurse. People were also able to have their blood sugar tested and receive a diabetes health check. Representatives from Diabetes UK and the CCG were on hand to discuss experiences with some service users and attain their feedback. For others, a survey was available to put their views across.
In June 2014, a further event was held in Wigan for around 60 people, this time focused on structured education. The event took on a slightly different approach. In the morning different diabetes services gave a presentation, outlining what patients can expect from them and the importance of the different elements. Following lunch (and a chance for attendees to visit different information stalls), facilitated table discussions were undertaken to understand people’s views on existing structured education programmes, what an education course should cover and what would encourage people to attend.
