Continuing their series of guidelines designed to improve the standard of inpatient diabetes care, the Joint British Diabetes Societies for Inpatient Care (JBDS-IP) present their first guideline with a predominant focus on older adults. It has been designed to complement the 2017 International Position Statement on the Management of Frailty in Diabetes (Sinclair et al, 2018).
The document guides inpatient care pathways with the specific aim to highlight the importance of the identification of frailty in an older adult with diabetes. The early identification of frailty using physical and cognitive domains will enhance clinical outcomes.
The guideline provides eight evidence-based recommendations, with guidance for their implementation, and is accompanied by appendices containing resources to further support clinicians whilst managing the inpatient care of frail older adults with diabetes.
