I'm not getting any support from my school

Question

Whenever I get cross my friends always make me look absolutely stupid and, the playground staff always say "Say sorry and don't do that again." Even my teacher does not do anything about it. My mum says my school is absolutely crazy. I kind of agree with her because, well, I am soon going from injections (because the staff refuse to do the injections anyway) to an insulin pump, but I will need a little help for the machine.

We are sorry to hear that you feel that your friends make you look stupid in the playground and you feel that the playground staff could be saying more to support you.

It’s great that you are able to contact us to talk about what is happening in your school.  It also sounds like you have spoken to your mum about issues at school.  Can you speak to your mum about how you are feeling and perhaps you can both speak to your teachers.

We have been working with schools to ensure that children with Type 1 diabetes are getting the proper care they need at school.  We have put together a pack for parents and schools to support schools and parents.  There is help for you using a pump when you get it.  Your mum can ask your paediatric diabetes nurse to teach school staff how to give insulin via the pump and how to look after the pump at school. There is information about this in the parent pack do look through the pack with your mum. Many young people with diabetes find that sometimes life can be difficult - you are not alone. This is a link to our ‘my life’ problem page section where you can read stories from others about their experiences. You can call the Careline on 0345 123 2399* Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm.
