  • Over half of people we surveyed said they had difficulties managing their diabetes during the pandemic.
  • A quarter of people who responded had an appointment relating to their diabetes cancelled since March 2020. These have still not taken place.
  • Just under half of people who responded (42%) said they experienced poor mental health because of their diabetes during the pandemic
  • Diabetes UK estimates there are 376,000 people in Northern Ireland at increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

The Coleraine Diabetes UK Support Group is marking World Diabetes Day on Sunday 14 November with an impressive donation of £7,000.

Throughout the pandemic, the Coleraine group adapted to new ways of reaching more people to offer their peer support by going online. This means they've been able to welcome more members to their group.

Alastair Smith, the Secretary of the group, said: “The pandemic has highlighted how tough it is to live with diabetes.

People from Northern Ireland can get on their bike and raise vital funds for Diabetes UK this autumn by taking part in a cycling challenge.

The UK Wide Cycle Ride runs throughout September and is a perfect opportunity to take your fitness up a gear while raising money for diabetes research along the way.

People from Northern Ireland are being invited to dive into a sponsored swimming challenge and raise vital funds for Diabetes UK.

Swim22 runs between 22 July and 22 October and involves swimming a total of 22 miles – the equivalent of crossing the English Channel. Participants can take on the challenge at their own pace, accumulating the miles across the course of the 12 weeks.

All funds raised will go towards Diabetes UK’s work in funding life-saving research and making sure everyone living with diabetes gets the care and support they need.

Tina McCrossan, National Director for Diabetes UK Northern Ireland, said: “Swimming is a fantastic way to help you get fit and healthy, have fun and set yourself a challenge.

People in Northern Ireland are being invited to step it up this summer and raise vital funds for Diabetes UK.

The One Million Step Challenge is ideal for anyone who rediscovered their love of walking in the great outdoors during the pandemic, or anyone looking for a way to get more active as lockdown restrictions are eased.

The challenge is simple – you take one million steps over the course of three months and get sponsored for every stride.

Kornel Wach, from Omagh, is just 9 years old and bravely getting his hair cut off to raise money for his local diabetes support group this Diabetes Week.

Four years ago Kornel and his family were given the news that he had type 1 diabetes and life as they knew it was about to change.
