Hi my name is Jessica and I am 11 years old and was diagnosed with diabetes in August 2011. It was a week before i started secondary school.
What had happened was i was drinking 12 glasses of water every morning and going to the toilet about 5-10 times every day. My whole family was affected by it since i was moody and tired all the time it was my nan and grandad that told my mum and dad to take me to the doctors.
I went up with my dad and we got there and had everything checked including my bloods that read HIGH and we were told i needed to go to hospital straight away. I had to have 2 blood tests while being in hospital. It was annoying and scary because we had a party that weekend, luckly i was allowed out for 3 hours but had to go back in afterwards.
I am fine now and coping well but the problem is my injections are hurting at the moment. All the advice i can give to people being newly diagnosed with diabetes is you are no different to anyone else you can do anything you could do before. It's not the end of the world.
"I was diagnosed two weeks before summer started and I was about to go into second year at secondary school. I had to stay in the hospital for a week and I went into school on the last day.... I hated it because nearly every class gave out sweets and cake and juice plus the head teacher said that we would finish before lunch so I never brought anything not knowing that everyone in fact had theirs with them."- Holly
"Your story is very similar to mine! I was diagnosed a few weeks ago and start at Secondary in September!!! I got really moody, was drinking a lot, going to the toilet a lot and losing lots of weight! Luckily I didn't have to stay in Hospital though.Im really glad it hsn't stopped me doing hardly anything though (except from eating sweets!!!).X"– Lauren
